Top Tips for Supporting Your Child with Exam Revision

Exams come with a lot of pressure which is why it’s no wonder that most children detest them. Nevertheless, they play an important role in their future as they’ll need them to prove their competence and strengths to employers. The only way to do well and make them less stressful is to revise. That’s the great thing about exams – there is no real way to fail if you’ve put in the work. Teachers essentially offer out the answers in the content that they deliver. There is nothing missed off the course syllabus that they will come across in their exams and it’s only a matter of sitting down to go over everything. If your child’s like the others their age, this may be challenging as there are so many distractions around. To offer parents some help, we turned to an independent school in Bath and these are the tips that they shared:

Device Screen Limits

The biggest challenge as we’ve mentioned is often everything else. Scrolling through social media and just about anything seems more fun than revising. If your child’s a victim to their devices, you can set screen limits on their gadgets. They will allow them to be used for a set time before getting booted out of the applications. A simple yet highly effective method.

Sit Beside Them

We don’t mean that you need to watch them like a hawk but being present when your child’s doing their work can help as you’re able to make sure that they’re physically doing their work and be there to help if they need it. Whether you were an A* student or not, you can help by explaining their questions and offering clarification.

Timetable

Time blocking can be a really effective way to meet your priorities. Exam season is a busy time. Your child may have anything upwards of 9 exams to sit in the space of a few months which can be hectic and difficult to organise. A timetable can give children a visual way to look at things and allocate their time where it’s most needed. It ensures that all of their revision is completed for when exams roll around.

Stress

Stress is a factor that you just can’t ignore. It affects almost every child as there is a lot riding on them to do well. Remember to check in on their mental health. See how they’re doing. If you find that they aren’t doing so well, they may benefit from speaking to a councillor or their teachers to find a way forward.
