Helping Your Child to Prepare for their School Exams

Preparing for school exams can be stressful for children – after all it’s usually the culmination of all their hard work over a number of years. As a parent, you’ll no doubt want your child to do their best and reach their potential. Thankfully, there is much you can do to support them throughout the exam period. Read on for some advice from a private school in Somerset on how you can help your child prepare properly for their exams.

Give them the right tools

First and foremost your child should have a quiet and distraction-free space to study in with all the resources they need. If they don’t have their own room, try to find a calm spot somewhere in the house where they can get their head down without being disturbed. Ask your child what they need in order to study efficiently, for example, specific stationery to help them revise. Having everything they need and a quiet space to learn will help reduce any stress they might be feeling when studying for their school exams.

Create a realistic revision timetable

If your child wants you to, help them design an achievable revision schedule which covers all the topics they need to study for their school exams, while also including time for relaxing, exercising and socialising. It’s important your child has some downtime so they don’t burn out with too much revision. Look at where they need to get to and break topics down into smaller chunks, then slot them into the timetable. Your child will see that they’ll be able to fit everything in if they stick to the schedule.

Encourage healthy habits for their school exams

As important as a consistent revision schedule is, it’s also vital that your child maintains a healthy lifestyle throughout the exam period. Make sure they’re getting enough sleep so they’re able to concentrate throughout the day, and encourage them to get plenty of exercise and eat a healthy and nutritious diet. This will help maintain their energy levels and motivation to continue studying.

Provide support for their school exams

Make sure your child knows that you’re there for them if they ever want to talk about their exams. It’s not healthy for them to bottle everything up and keep their worries to themselves. If they’re not keen on talking to you, maybe they’d find it easier to talk to someone more objective, such as a friend or teacher. Either way, encourage your child to keep communicating with whoever they feel comfortable with so they have a healthy outlet for any stress or concerns.
