3 Ways To Look After Your Mouth

We all know that we should be brushing our teeth twice a day and making sure that we floss between meals in order to do our bit in keeping our teeth in tip-top condition. This combined with regular trips to the dentist is the best way to keep your whole mouth healthy and look after your teeth. But is there more than we should be doing to look after our oral health? Here are 3 ways to look after your mouth.

World Oral Health day took place this month and with it plenty of advice on how to look after your mouth and protect your teeth. As we get older it can seem harder to keep our teeth as pearly white as they once were – as lifestyle starts to stain and affect our teeth. However, just because it can seem harder to keep our teeth nice and white that doesn’t mean we should give up on the idea altogether; instead, we should just work a little harder and make small changes to keep our whole mouth healthy.

Watch What We Put in Our Mouths

Many people assume that if they are drinking sugar-free fizzy drinks then this won’t affect their teeth, because there is no sugar to attack them but that is not the case at all. Although we all know that sugar damages our teeth it is worth remembering that the acid in any fizzy drink can have its own effect too! That isn’t to say that you need to stop drinking these altogether but it;s worth considering how much fruit juice, fizzy drinks and other sweet stuff you consume in a day and whether you can change your habits to reduce this and look after your mouth.

Consider Sugar-Free Gum and Look After Your Mouth

As part of World Oral Health day this month there was an initiative to highlight the benefits of adding chewing sugar-free gum into your list of daily habits. Several pieces of research by the Faculty of Dentistry at Kings College London shows that sugar-free gum can improve oral health in both adults and children; especially when chewed after meals – it helps to neutralise plaque acids and prevent teeth damage, great ways to look after your mouth. Not only that, but a 2011 study in Japan showed that chewing gum can help to reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Experts within the dental industry recommend the regular use of sugar-free gum to clean the mouth after meals. Professor Liz Kay, President of the British Dental Association recently wrote this piece on the importance of preventative qualities of gum at the time of crisis in dental services following the pandemic.

Further to that, the calming effects of SFG are now widely known both scientifically and anecdotally.

Take Out Piercings – Look After Your Mouth

If you’re serious about looking after your teeth then removing any mouth piercings is a must. Although these look great the metal piercings often clash against teeth and can cause chips, cracks and other damage.

For great oral health, you should combine regular brushing, watching what you eat and drink, removing any piercings and ensuring that you always have plenty of sugar-free gum to chew after meals; all of that really does make a difference and will help your mouth feel amazing all day long!
