Exploring mindfulness and Understanding mindfulness

When it comes to defining mindfulness, it is basically the practice of intentionally bringing an individual’s attention to the present moment without any judgement. It involves paying attention to one’s thoughts, feelings, sensations in the body, and their surrounding environment. By teaching your child to be present in the here and now, you will be able to help them develop a greater sense of self-awareness, emotional regulation, and compassion for both themselves and others around them.

Exploring mindfulness – Lead by example

Children learn best through observing those around them, so it is absolutely essential to practice mindfulness yourself in your own life. By doing so, your child will have the chance to witness your calm and grounded demeanour. Whether you practice taking a few deep breaths to regulate yourself, engage in a short session of meditation, or simply try and be fully present during daily activities, it is important that you let your child see you take on mindfulness as a priority.

Exploring mindfulness  – Mindful walk

There are a number of mindful activities that your child can take part in, that not only keeps them engaged, but gives them a unique route to take that truly helps them reap the benefits of mindfulness. A mindful walk is an amazing way to get your child to really feel themselves in the present. You can take them on a walk down to the shops, to your local nature reserve, or drive out a little and find a hidden beach.

On your walk, encourage your child to connect with all of their senses. Ask them what they can hear, smell and see. Remind them to take deep breaths and to really place themselves in the present.

Exploring mindfulness with your child is an amazing journey that ensures they develop compassion and an appreciation for the here and now. By taking on the tips above, your child will be well on their way to practicing and appreciating mindfulness to the max!
