Fixings and fasteners are the foundation of most objects, pieces of furniture and even buildings. Think about tables, chairs, and doors… the main thing these have in common is that these are held together by tiny fasteners, such as screws and bolts.
So, today I thought I’d give some attention to these small details that often get overlooked or go unnoticed. What are fixings and fasteners?
As Jenny in Neverland explains, “Fixings and fasteners are a term used interchangeably to refer to the device used to join two surfaces together.” However, she also mentions that the terms and meaning can become confusing, so it might be easier to use the word “fastener” for the device used for fixing and the word “fixing” to refer to the act of securing an object in place.
Types of fasteners.
- Screws
Screws are one of the most popular types of fasteners used across various projects. These have a head on one end and a thread on the other. Screws can either create their own threaded hole into the material being fastened to or be inserted into a pre-drilled hole.
- Bolts
Similar to screws, bolts also feature a head on one end and a thread on the other. However, bolts are non-tapered fasteners that require nuts and washers to be secured to a surface.
- Nails
Nails are the oldest method of holding two items together. Nails are cheap, easy-to-use and are available in various types to better suit a variety of applications.
- Anchors
Anchors are heavy-duty fasteners. Also known as anchor bolts, these are designed to connect structural and non-structural elements to concrete.
