The Link Between Chewing Gum and Women’s Health

Whilst no one would suggest that a simple pack of chewing gum can transform your life, research shows some strong links between chewing gum and improving women’s health.

Living in a woman’s body can be challenging, especially during stages of their life where big hormonal changes take place – puberty is one that many people struggle with as it’s usually unchartered and inexperienced so can feel like it really takes its toll. However, even being pregnant, going through menopause or just experiencing your monthly period can leave you feeling as though you have been put through the wringer. This is something that probably isn’t talked about enough.

Dealing with These Changes

If you’re someone that is going through any sort of hormonal changes, or you want to know how you can deal with them in the future it’s important to know that everyone is different. It’s also important to recognise that you are not alone in your feelings & that your experiences are completely valid. If one method of feeling better during these changes doesn’t work for you, then try something else until you do find something that offers some relief.

The Link to Oral Health

What we don’t often consider is what effect these physical changes can have on the rest of our body – including things like our oral health. It could be that because we feel so battered by hormonal changes we neglect looking after our teeth and it could be that our body going through such a tough time means that our teeth need extra looking after. The Oral Health Foundation has been looking at this and the positive effect that the regular chewing of sugar-free gum can have.

One thing that we do know is that poor oral health can lead to a range of other issues, including a lack of confidence when a woman’s smile isn’t how she would like. Once poor oral health has been established it can be hard to backtrack on so it’s important to create healthy habits as soon as possible. Places like Science Direct have carried out thorough research on the chewing of gum and the improvement in oral health & there is a definite correlation between the two. One thing their report looked at was the lack of dentists available and how the rest of the health industry can pull together to help with this; including all health professionals carrying out quick oral health checks as part of the other health checks to be able to give women an early warning if there is something showing that could affect their long term oral health.

Alongside this reports have looked at the benefits of sugar-free chewing gum and long-term oral health – where women (and men) can incorporate chewing gum into their routine particularly when they are unable to brush after eating and especially when their body is experiencing any sort of hormonal changes which could affect other parts of the body. We know that chewing gum encourages the production of saliva to help protect teeth from the acid that is created when you chew food, so it makes sense to take advantage of this and do what you can to keep your teeth in tip top condition.
