Tips for Helping Your Child Learn a New Language – Learning a new language can open many doors for children, but it isn’t easy by any means as hundreds of hours are often needed to become a confident speaker. To help make the process easier, we recommend looking for fun learning activities that will easily allow your child to take vocabulary and the various language rules on board. Below are some that were shared with us by a senior school in Hampshire.
Learn a New Language – A Language Course
The best thing about this method of learning is that courses are often self-paced, meaning that children can repeat lessons as many times as necessary to develop their understanding and confidence.
Learn a New Language – Foreign TV Shows
A new language can quite simply be picked up from watching tv. Many of your child’s favourite cartoons will likely have their own foreign equivalents which they can watch with subtitles to slowly pick up new words and an understanding of another language.
Learn a New Language – Put Them on A Ban
Once your child’s become a little more confident in the language they are learning, you could consider putting them on a language ban where they cannot speak English for 24 hours. It will get them to practise and really put what they have learned to use.
Learn a New Language – Visit Another Country Together
Learning another language for a holiday is a huge task. We don’t recommend it as it can overwhelm children and put them under unnecessary pressure. What you can do however is encourage them to learn a few simple phrases that they will need on their travels.
Learn a New Language – Study Abroad Opportunities
If your child is adventurous, they could even complete a term, or year, of study abroad depending on the kind of opportunities their school offers. It’s a fantastic way that they can learn about another culture and language as they will be living there for an extended period of time.
Learn a New Language – Teach Them Yourself
If travelling is not on the cards, you can try teaching your child yourself if you happen to know another language other than English. Begin by introducing them to new words and dropping them into conversation to help slowly build their language speaking skills.
This post gives you a few different options to consider. While they are great, remember that learning a new language is challenging and requires time and patience. Remind your child of this and to not give up as with time and practice they will surely improve.
