How to Promote Your Child’s Independence

How to Promote Your Child’s Independence – As children grow up, they must learn basic life skills and how to handle problems that come their way. It provides excellent preparation for later life and times that you won’t be there. For parents wanting to develop their child’s independence, we have some tips below from a private school in Buckinghamshire.

How to Promote Your Child’s Independence

Take Them Out of Their Comfort Zone

To help your child with their independence, you will need to gradually edge them out of their comfort zone and look for new challenges they can attempt. As they do, they will develop confidence and the ability to tackle similar situations without needing help.

Independence

Look and Copy

When teaching little ones, you should give them ample opportunity to learn and get to grips with what you’re teaching them. To help them, adopt a “look and copy” approach with everyday tasks they can learn.

Imitation

Children love imitating their parents so it is a good way that you can get them to learn everyday tasks such as tidying up. You can find miniature versions of the tools you use such as a gardening set and kitchen utensils to tease the idea and let them have a go at the jobs you do.

Set a Good Example

Parents must be a good example to their children as they look to them for support and guidance. The same goes for developing their independence. By demonstrating a fearless approach to challenges and dealing with them the best you can by yourself, you can encourage your child to do the same.

Use Praise

It’s also important to praise children and let them know that they are doing a good job as it build’s confidence and their willingness to learn more.

Below are a few tasks you can phase into their routine to help them become more independent:

  • Getting dressed – All children can learn to dress themselves. Start with easy items of clothing such as their coat, bag, socks and slowly progress on to more difficult items such as shoes that require fastening.
  • Plating their own food and washing up after themselves – Depending on how old they are, your child can learn to plate their own food and wash up after themselves.
  • Cooking – Cooking is a basic life skill and again will depend on your child’s age. If your child isn’t yet mature enough to use the stove, you can teach them how to make simple foods like sandwiches.

Although being independent is a good trait to have, it’s equally important that children know how to work with others and understand that they can lean on others when they need help.
