Exploring Internet Safety with Your Child

The internet is likely to be a big part of your child’s life, so they need to learn to use it appropriately and safely. There are many advantages to the internet of course and it provides so many opportunities for learning, but it’s important for kids to be aware of its drawbacks and risks. As parents it’s our job to ensure our children understand how to use the internet in the right way and avoid potential dangers. Here a prep school in Gloucester gives some tips on exploring internet safety with your child when browsing with providers such as ATT internet.

Explore safety settings

Before your child starts using the internet, it’s a good idea to spend some time together exploring safety settings. You’ll want to make sure your child only has access to safe and secure sites and isn’t exposed to anything explicit or dangerous, and you can control this in your internet settings. Doing this with your child provides an opportunity for you to discuss the potential risks of using the internet if it isn’t set up properly first.

Discuss the risks

Teach your child what to look out for when they’re online, for example, strangers trying to get their contact details or being lured into scams. Explain that they should only visit secure sites and never share any personal details with people they don’t know. You may also want to discuss topics such as oversharing, online bullying, and comparing oneself to others online so your child understands the risks and how certain online activities could affect them.

Set boundaries

You might want to consider setting time limits for how long your child can use the internet, or implementing a curfew after which they know they need to come offline. Some families also ban the internet in particular places, such as a child’s bedroom or at the dinner table, or only allow internet use for studying (rather than socialising). It’s up to you what boundaries you enforce, but doing so helps keep internet use safe and healthy, limiting the possibility of it negatively affecting your child’s mental health or the family dynamics.

Make use of games, TV programmes or books

Your child can also learn about internet safety by reading books, watching TV programmes or playing games that explore the topic. They might find it easier to understand certain concepts by having them presented visually, or by getting involved themselves.

It’s likely your child will also explore safe internet use at school as well, but home learning around the topics will help them apply what they’ve learnt to real-world situations.
