How Do My Child’s Lifestyle Choices Affect their Education

Child’s Lifestyle Choices nd their lifestyle plays a huge role in determining how successful we are and can affect your child’s education by hijacking their energy and influencing them to make poor decisions. We have teamed up with an independent school in Surrey to explore a few lifestyle choices that can affect a child’s education.

Child’s Lifestyle Choices – Friendship Groups

Peers are a huge influence in a child’s life and can exert pressure on them to act and behave in a certain way. This can be either positive or negative depending on the company that they keep as they can be encouraged to work hard to attain similar goals. Negative influences can have the opposite effect, encouraging them to act out, rebel and be disruptive in class. To help your child pick their friends wisely, it’s important to help them recognise the difference between the two and what makes a bad friend.

Child’s Lifestyle Choices – Inadequate Sleep

Staying awake until late to play video games and stream Netflix spells a recipe for disaster. It can severely affect your child’s concentration, mood and have a toll on their physical health making them less prepared for school. Making sure that your child sticks to their bedtime and gets a full 8 hours of sleep can help them to stay focused, retain information and perform well in class.

Child’s Lifestyle Choices – Drinking Enough Water

To ensure that your child can work to the best of their ability at school, it’s important for them to stay hydrated. Our bodies are around 70% water and a lack of it can compromise our brain’s cognitive ability and focus. If your child struggles to get all their glasses in for the day, flavoured or infused water can help to make it a little less boring and do the trick.

Child’s Lifestyle Choices – Diet

We are what we eat and food fuels the body. It’s with no surprise that with poor quality foods, the brain can’t work at its best. Foods that are high in sugar hike up the body’s energy levels temporarily and create a huge crash, making it feel even worse than before. This can reduce your child’s attention in class and affect the amount of information that they are able to retain. Instead, you want to add slow-release carbs to their diet to help them to feel energised throughout the day. There are also several foods that can help to improve their brain health like oily fish containing omega-3, nuts, and berries.
