3 Picnic Food Ideas

We’re definitely in picnic season, because what’s nicer than enjoying a nice lunch on the grass with some lovely scenery surrounding you? One of the great things about packing a picnic is that they can be as simple or as intricate as you like – so here are some easy picnic food ideas.

Sandwiches

Sandwiches might not seem like a revolutionary idea when it comes to picnic food – but did you know you can freeze sandwiches once they’re made? Frozen sandwiches are ideal for a picnic on a warm day because you can save yourself time on the day by preparing your sandwiches in advance. Then, taking them out on the morning of your picnic and placing them in your hamper means that they’ll 1) help keep everything nice and cool for a few hours and 2) be defrosted and ready to eat by the time your picnic comes around – perfect!

Alternatively, take a BBQ and cook hot food while you are there – there’s not much better than hot sausages in rolls on a picnic is there? Places like Swaledale Butchers have loads of different sausage types which means you can be sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Pinwheels

Pinwheels are pretty much a staple snack in our house, but they make great picnic food too. You simply need to get a sheet of that jus-roll puff pastry, top with tomato puree ( or BBQ sauce), cheese and your choice of toppings. Roll it up, cut it into wheels and bake – they’ll last a couple of days if stored correctly. They’re great for a picnic because they store well, don’t take up much room and it’s possible to eat them without too much mess – pastry flakes don’t count!

Dips

Dips are a good choice because they’re easy to store and can be eaten with a variety of stuff – which means a pot of dip, some chopped up vegetables, a share bag of crisps and some bread sticks and you have yourself a picnic feast – with pretty much no effort. Because of the amount of stuff that can be served with dips, there is likely to be something for everyone – you could even dip your pinwheel in if you were feeling adventurous!
