Summer is here – or at least it should be, let’s ignore the weather glitch we have seen over the last couple of days! It’s also the 1st July which means we’re well over halfway through 2021, can you believe it? A smear test can be an intense experience. I vividly remember sitting in the waiting room, already late for work, and panicking about what was about to happen. At the time I was twenty-five and had never had anyone see my genitals apart from my husband. Although I had been sexually active since my early twenties, smear tests were only recommended for those who were twenty-five and above (unless of course there were concerns), and so there was never any need to go through an examination prior to this. Due to the ‘embarrassing’ nature of the procedure, I hadn’t asked my mother or female friends about it and so I was completely clueless as to what to expect. Would they laugh at me? The standard American diet is extremely high in processed foods and beverages, leading to inflammation and even ultimately to arthritis. Such inflammation is a big problem because it can eat away at the cartilage in the joints so that bone rubs against bone. Not only does this cause pain and discomfort but it even leads to further inflammation. This same standard American diet is also responsible for weight gain and obesity and, of course, extra strain on those same joints while a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise just compounds both arthritis and obesity. When I turned 40, I didn’t even know that peri menopause was a thing! I knew that menopause would happen ‘sometime near 50’ and that because I was a bit older when I had my children, I’d probably feel menopausal about the same time as my daughter was experiencing puberty. I joked about it! My mother had a surgical menopause at 40 due to a hysterectomy so I didn’t even have her experience to learn from.
